NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Institute for Sustainable Development and Partners for Livable Communities announced that the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce and the City of North Myrtle Beach are a finalist for the Green Plus North American Sustainable Enterprise Awards in the Community Category.

The awards, held annually in the North Carolina Research Triangle and in Washington, D.C., recognize communities, chambers of commerce, and businesses that are national leaders in sustainable economic development.

“North Myrtle Beach’s leadership in off-shore wind power provides a tremendous example of how renewable energy can create both jobs and healthy environments for our communities,” said Chris Carmody, Executive Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development. “North Myrtle Beach’s public – private partnership is an example to any community that wants to prosper as the 21st century advances,” Carmody concluded.

Green Plus communities and chambers of commerce winners will be recognized at a luncheon at PNC Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C., Thursday, June 16, 2011.

“We are honored to learn that we have been selected as a finalist in the Green Plus North American Sustainable Enterprise Awards. This is a tribute to our leadership, both public and private, for its focus on sustainability and a ‘Going Green is good for business’ commitment,” stated Marc Jordan, President/CEO of the Chamber.

“This public/private partnership is not only good for business and the environment,” said North Myrtle Beach Mayor Marilyn Hatley, “it is educational in nature and will help to raise awareness among our young people— our future leaders— as to the green options that are available to them.”

Chamber and city representivies will travel to Washington D.C. on June 16 for the awards ceremony.
